Everybody can be great... because anybody can serve. You don't have to have a college degree to serve. You don't have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.
- Martin Luther King, Jr.
We believe...

A Statement of Principles of the
Democratic Party of Cass County, Indiana

  1. We believe in America, the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.
  2. We believe in the Freedom of Speech and peaceful political dissent and hold these beliefs as essential to preserving and strengthening our democracy.
  3. We believe in fair play, honest and high ethical standards. For candidates and office holders, this directly implies disclosure and avoidance of all ethical and financial conflicts, real or readily perceived.
  4. We believe in the right to worship according to one's own faith and religion. We oppose government interference with the free exercise of religion. We also oppose religious interference or entanglement with government.
  5. We believe in equal treatment and opportunity to excel for all, without any discriminatory classifications.
  6. We believe in privacy and individual freedoms and the protection of the civil rights and liberties they imply.
  7. We believe in a viable and strong national and homeland defense coupled with international integrity and respect for human rights. Our diplomacy and advocacy should be wise, humble and consistent. We view these principles as essential to our overall national security,
  8. We believe in safe streets, schools and neighborhoods. Convicted criminals should be punished certainly and without delay. Police should be visible, adequately trained, fairly paid and neighborhood-based.
  9. We believe that the environment in general, and in particular, our unique coastal treasures have been entrusted to our care and that we should protect, nourish and preserve the natural world and its resources for future generations.
  10. We believe taxation and government spending should be responsible, modest and above all, equitable, both in the present and as it relates to future generations.
  11. We believe in the protection, security and support of our local ports and the jobs they provide to our economy. Provisions to provide ample security against terror should be adequately funded.
  12. We believe in the sustaining and further development of safe, affordable and adequate housing in Cass County.
  13. We believe in adequate funding and support for our public schools: to meet all state and federal mandates and to provide competitive pay for all our educational personnel.
  14. We believe in protection, care and accommodation for the elderly and disabled.
  15. We believe every one of our citizens is entitled to affordable and obtainable health care and medicine.
  16. We believe that families are precious and diverse in form and that there is a compelling public interest in nurturing family units and also offering protection from abuse and neglect.
  17. We believe in a fair and credible working wage, safe job conditions and the right of workers to organize. We also believe corporations (enjoying the protection of our legal system) have obligations to both their shareholders and the public to conduct themselves ethically and with due regard for the interests of the general public. We also believe in creating a positive environment for new and small businesses to develop, prosper and compete.
